This page is not intended to be
all-inclusive source of information about
Fort Rucker, but rather a quick introduction
that will serve as a jumping off point to
learn more about the post.Reporting to
Fort Rucker
When you arrive at Fort Rucker for flight
school, you'll be reporting the 1-145th
Aviation Battalion Headquarters, in building
5911, located on Andrews Avenue. The
easiest way to locate it is to find the Army
Aviation museum, then start looking from
there. It's only a few blocks away.
Upon arriving at the battalion headquarters,
go directly to the Student Management Office
(SMO) on the second floor. Be sure to
bring 6-7 copies of your orders with you.
Where to Shop
Fort Rucker has a Post Exchange, Commissary,
and a number of Mini-Malls. If you've
spent a lot of time on any larger bases, you
won't be impressed, but they are practical
enough. Most people shop at Wal-Mart
in Ozark or Enterprise. Dothan (30
mins away) has a mall, Best Buy, Dillards,
Sam's, Kohls, etc.
Things to Do
Within the base itself, there isn't much to
do. However, it won't matter much,
because while you are in flight school,
you'll be spending so much time studying and
memorizing EPs and Limits, that
entertainment will quickly become a very low
priority. However, if you do find
yourself having some free time, there is a
bowling alley, trap range, two gyms (one
with an Olympic-sized pool, another with a
rock wall), the Army Aviation Museum, a
library, a movie theater, and the
leader's club, Aviator's Landing. A
number of hiking and walking trails are also
available, and the Lake Tholoco recreation
area is located on the north side of post. Your
best bet for real entertainment is to get
away from the post.

Where to Live
On-post housing is available to all
flight school students. In
exchange for 100% of your housing
allowance (BAH) you can live on post at
no charge. The Army outsources the
housing on Fort Rucker to Picerne
Military Housing. People have
mixed results in dealing with them, and
some have good experiences. Others
have bad. There are many new
and/or renovated houses available, but
there are a great many more run-down old
houses. Depending on the luck of
the draw, what you receive will greatly
impact how happy you'll be with the post
housing. Because of this, many
flight school students choose to live
off-post instead. They get to keep
their BAH, choose exactly where they
want to live, and have the freedom to do
what they want. We strongly
suggest living on the Daleville side of
post. It's closest to the bus
stops for the airfield and simulators,
as well as where all your academic
classes will be in the main part of
post. It's a 5-10 minute drive
from Enterprise to the gate, and another
5-10 minutes from the Enterprise gate to
the main post. When the flight
line buses are at 0430, every minute
counts.
